Technology is increasing exponentially, but is our philosophy? You have to be prepared to deal with new situations that have never been dealt with before. Issues, like how we morally and ethically handle life or death, have all been called into question.
The world has seen, in the past, where morality and ethics were dominion of religious factions. The texts, from which the priest class primarily derived its guidance from, were not accessible. More often than not, even if you were literate, the texts were not likely in your native language. The family, tribe, or closest-knit community structure is, of course, where most people form their moral philosophy. But today we look at a world where the population of the "western" world no longer has a strong structural background, apart from the state and popular culture.
- In America alone, over 21 million children (over 1/4th of all children) are raised by nearly 14 million single parents.
Throughout the past, before advanced forms of mass persuasion were developed, man was readily hesitant to commit acts of force, or subjugate ours or our neighbor's freedoms, for a never seen threat. Provocative issues like abortion never had to be regulated, strong community ties efficiently guided our moral actions.
Today we are reaching all new summits of advancement. We near the ability to control and change life at a fundamental level. "New" philosophical fields like "bio-ethics" have developed as a response to this unknown path which man has taken.
In the era of genetic engineering and cyber-security, ethics are more important today then they have ever been. Our society lacks in strong morality and personal knowledge. Ask someone their philosophy or standard of ethics, it is likely regurgitated and highly convoluted. In most cases, discussing philosophy is too taboo and awkward, like talking about important opinions and ideas at parties.
As the world progresses into future, the institutions that defined our societies (governments, schools, religions, etc) are being found increasingly obsolete. How will science merge with philosophy? Think about it, because issues like reproduction rights, cloning, and human enhancement aren't going away.
