Michael Clarke Duncan Passes Away at 54

To contact us Click HERE

Via Morris Chestnut's Facebook page, I just learned of actor Michael Clarke Duncan's death. I have not been watching news much lately, so I did not hear of it sooner.

Chestnut said in his FB post, "RIP to Michael Clarke Duncan. A man with a tremendous spirit and great talent. It was an honor to have known you. You will be surely missed my brotha!"

I never saw Duncan in person, but whenever I saw him on screen I always had that feeling that he had a beautiful spirit. This news shocked me because to die at age 54 is to die too soon, and he always seemed so healthy and content. I even watched Fox's show The Finder a few times just to see him. He was a fine actor with a great voice.

According to CNN, Duncan, who was nominated for an Oscar in for his performance in The Green Mile, never fully recovered from a "myocardial infarction" he suffered earlier this summer.

Melissa Harris-Perry on America's high incarceration rates

I watched with concern today Melissa Harris-Perry's segment about America's high incarceration rate on MSNBC. Our rate is the highest in the world.

She spoke to Norris Henderson, a New Orleans activist who was "wrongfully incarcerated for more than 27 years," according to multiple sources, and she also questioned Orleans Parish Sheriff Marlin N. Gusman about why Louisiana invests more money to imprison people rather than educate them or to fund prevention programs.

Following that segment, she continued to discuss the skyrocketing rate of incarceration in the nation with other experts and how the prison complex has become a profit-making center and an "economic engine." Furthermore, the guests on the show said that being "tough on crime" doesn't work to reduce crime.

I was aware of a lot of these statistics and issues already, such as being convicted of a felony may disenfranchise citizens with a criminal past long after they've served time. As I watched, I thought of Michel Foucault's Discipline and Punish..

Weighing bell hooks's review of Beasts of the Southern Wild

To contact us Click HERE
I have not yet seen Beasts of the Southern Wild, but bell hooks's negative review of the film is the first negative review I've seen. I respect her and suspect that if she sees in the film what she's written here, then that's probably what is in the film. You can read her entire review at New Black Man (in Exile). What struck me most was her assertion that movie smacks of conservative ideology and how she likens that agenda to a dog-eat-dog life philosophy.
Ultimately this film expresses a conservative agenda. Before audiences had a clue about its content, the notion that it was somehow a radical response to Katrina circulated. But there is nothing radical about the age-old politics of domination the movie espouses – insisting that only the strong survive, that disease weeds out the weak (i.e. the slaughter of Native Americans,) that nature chooses excluding and including. If Wink represents the dying untamed primitive then what does Hushpuppy represent. Her fate is unclear. Given all that she endures she may just end up being the mad black female, talking to herself, wandering in a wilderness of spirit so profound that she is forever lost.
Lately, watching the presidential election coverage, I've been attuned to this aspect of conservatism: although many of its proponents who profess to be Christian promote the philosophy, the philosophy flies in the face of aspirations to love, compassion, justice, concern for the poor, and cooperation to achieve the goals of a more noble existence, New Testament ideals.

The odd thing is that I did not have the film on my list of must sees before (it was on the "see if I get the chance" list), but now I want to see it to see if I see what Ms. hooks sees. Like me, hooks also perceived problems with the movie and book The Help that others did not see (I really got tired of people telling me I had to see The Help as though it was something fresh.), so I suspect my assessment of this film may be similar to hers when I see it. The trick will be to divorce myself from her view so that I can make my own assessment.

Look! It's Samuel L. Jackson with 'Wake the F**k Up ' for Obama (NSFW)

On the heels of his narration of the parents' book, "Go the F*ck to Sleep," actor Samuel L. Jackson now narrates a nightmarish tale with a message for presidential election voters: Wake the F*ck Up!" Here is a link to the website that posted the video. The site is funded by the Jewish Council for Education & Research.

The story begins:

"In the silvery moonlight that bathes every town,
The people lye dreaming so safe and so sound.
They're warm in their beds, snuggled up in their sheets,
But four years before, they were out in the streets."
It's a cautionary tale that warns the apathetic of the trouble the nation will see if Mitt Romney is elected. Basically, it tells voters to wake up and work to get President Barack Obama re-elected.

The text on the website reads, "Sorry my friends but there's no time to snore / An out-of-touch millionaire has just declared war."

Humor score high.

Obama with his grandmother in Hawaii
A young Barack Obama with his grandmother
Madelyn Dunham of Hawaii. She passed
away in 2008 at age 86 due to cancer.
I can only guess at the reason my blog suddenly has so many hits from people searching for information about President Obama's grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, who was his maternal grandmother, the mother of his mother, Ann Dunham.

The president spoke about Madelyn Dunham last night during the presidential debate, and to the left is the well-known picture of her hugging him when he was a younger man.

Some readers also may have heard that KitchenAid had to apologize for an offensive comment someone connected to the company tweeted last night when the president mentioned his grandmother. It came from the company's official account. Companies need to stop letting any idiot have access to their social media accounts.

Below this paragraph I've added links you may find useful if you're sincerely interested in his relationship with his grandmother Dunham, his white grandmother (I don't think the president knew his African grandmother. The Sarah Obama of Kenya that Yahoo image search shows as the president's grandmother is not his biological grandmother. ). However, it is through his grandmother Dunham that Ancestry.com research (pdf) tentatively traced the president's "white" roots back to an African slave. His white grandfather, Stanley Dunham, however, has not connection to slavery. He was English and Irish.

  • Obama's Grandmother, AKA Toot, Dies Peacefully (WSATA, November 3, 2008)

Here is a video of then-candidate Obama speaking about his grandmother in 2008 after her death. He said that she was a humble and plainspoken person, a quiet hero.

To educate the people who are coming by looking for pictures of the president's grandmother and are being sent to my post on the First Grandmother,  I must inform you that Yahoo is sending you to the wrong picture. The First Grandmother post is about First Lady Michelle Obama's mother, Marian Robinson, who is alive and well.

Why I Am Leaving Goldman Sachs

To contact us Click HERE
This is making the round on the Internets today, so you may have seen it. If not, it is worth a read.

"To put the problem in the simplest terms, the interests of the client continue to be sidelined in the way the firm operates and thinks about making money. Goldman Sachs is one of the world’s largest and most important investment banks and it is too integral to global finance to continue to act this way. The firm has veered so far from the place I joined right out of college that I can no longer in good conscience say that I identify with what it stands for."

Of course, a rational reader will question the motivation of the author. He seems to have made his money at GS, only after which he decides to publicly air dirty laundry. Regardless, it is interesting.

You can find the entire article here.

"Why I left Google" - an interesting piece from a former employee on the negative impact that Google+ has had on the company (in his opinion, of course). My favorite quote:

"As it turned out, sharing was not broken. Sharing was working fine and dandy, Google just wasn’t part of it. People were sharing all around us and seemed quite happy. A user exodus from Facebook never materialized. I couldn’t even get my own teenage daughter to look at Google+ twice, “social isn’t a product,” she told me after I gave her a demo, “social is people and the people are on Facebook.” Google was the rich kid who, after having discovered he wasn’t invited to the party, built his own party in retaliation. The fact that no one came to Google’s party became the elephant in the room."

Here is an article about the post, and the actual post itself.

"X, I have found that these setups tend to work nice: a gap down, and a move back up though the previous day's range, with a setup after a pullback from the high. An example would be DTV from today. 15-minute chart, Fibs over the opening range first three bars, and I entered on a break of the 5th bar high after price had a brief pullback and found support at the 8EMA. The entry signal was what you referred to as "offsetting bars". I sold six bars later when price hit the Fibonacci extension. Just curious if any other X readers trade this kind of setup.

"I'm not sure if my trades are worthy of highlighting, but maybe it is good for comments section. It is a little similar to the two charts from David and David - classic X type setup, 15-minute chart, Fibonacci over the opening range (symbol = GLUU). The trade is later in the day, however, so I am not sure that X would take it but other readers might have. Also, I use a trendline on this chart. Here are the specifics: Gap up, rally, pullback - the pullback never closed below the 50% retracement. Trendline from the pivot high on the third bar to the 12th bar. Entry was a break of the 2:30EST bar's high - that bar was also a hammer, and price had broken the trendline, and had support from the 8EMA. I closed the trade with a .20 profit which doesn't sound like a lot, but due to the price of GLUU it was actually over 4% gain."

Here is John's chart with the trendline and trigger bar marked (John, if I drew the trendline wrong please let me know in "comments"):

"This was a perfect setup, so I couldn't resist commenting. TOL, 15-min chart - price rallied after a gap up, wide range first bar, my Fibonacci lines plotted over the first two bar's range. Price pulled back to the top of the retracement zone and formed a nice "offsetting bars" pattern, and had support from the 5EMA. I entered on a break of the 5th bar's high, and sold at the Fibonacci extension. Classic X setup that worked perfect!!!"

A Smartphone Future? But Not Yet

A compelling article on what smartphones may be doing to us:

Nicholas Carr, author of “The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains,” argues in the book that because of the brain’s neuroplasticity, Web surfing rewires people to be more adept at perfunctory multitasking, but diminishes the ability to sustain focus and think interpretatively.

Smartphones are especially pernicious because they “increase the ease of access to the Internet far beyond anything we’ve had with laptops,” Mr. Carr said in an interview over his land line (he also owns a dumbphone, as do the other family members). “You see a similar type of compulsive behavior” to computer-assisted Web surfing, “but it can go on continuously from the moment you wake up to the moment you go to sleep.”

Such constant online status, Mr. Carr said, means that “we stop having opportunities to be alone with our thoughts, something that used to come naturally.”

“Anytime we have a spare second,” he said, “we feel compelled to check what’s going on outside of us.”

I am an avid iPhone owner and user, but these concerns have bothered me for a while. Read the rest here.

"This was similar to my TOL trade last week, but I prefer these three bar setups because they happen faster. 15-minute chart, Fibonacci lines over the first three bars, entry on a break of the third bar high. The third bar was at support from the 50% retracement, the rising 5EMA, and it was a strong bar that closed at its high. I sold at the Fiboancci extension for a .40 gain. There was a "beyond the Fibonacci extension" setup later in the day, good for another .40, but I missed it."

Face the Facts: We Are All Headed For an iDisorder

To contact us Click HERE
This is a follow-up to my post last week about smartphones.

"It should come as no surprise that we are all hopelessly addicted to our devices, particularly our smartphones. Why shouldn’t we be? We are now able to carry a powerful computer around 24/7 in our pocket or purse. The new “WWW” really means “Whatever, Wherever, Whenever.” And we are all succumbing to its draw. Just look at any restaurant table and you will see phones sitting next to forks and knives. It is normal to see someone pick up a smartphone, tap tap tap and put it back down while in the middle of talking. Is this healthy or are we all headed down a slippery slope toward what I call an “iDisorder.”

An iDisorder is where you exhibit signs and symptoms of a psychiatric disorder such as OCD, narcissism, addiction or even ADHD, which are manifested through your use — or overuse — of technology. Whether our use of technology makes us exhibit these signs or simply exacerbates our natural tendencies is an open question, but the fact is we are all acting as though we are potentially diagnosable."

I'm not sure if people agree, disagree, or ignore because they see these signs in themselves. For me personally, I'm a bit concerned and becoming more aware of my lack of awareness!

Avatar- Braver, Faster, Stronger

To contact us Click HERE

The cinematic technology of box office blockbusters is ravenously consumed by popular culture. Millions of people around the world fill darkly lit rooms to see these works of art. In the average 90 minutes of a film so much is presented to the audience that it is impossible to comprehend everything. The following is the first I cover the science in blockbuster propaganda, starting with the best of the best.

Avatar(2009), directed by James Cameron, is the highest grossing film of all time having pulled in $2,783,165,628 USD worldwide. Of course, this is not accounting for the wonderfully painful ticket price inflation, which would leave it actually 14th. (Behind Ben Hurr and eight spots behind Cameron's Titanic.)

Avatar was and is a massive business venture. Video games, soundtracks, re-releases, 3d, 4d, IMAX, toys, promotions, cereal, you name it and it probably was painted blue for at least a week.

James Cameron does it big and that is why he was the man for this half billion dollar production. Aliens (1986), Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), and Titanic (1997) are lesser known films of his.

Oh, can you say, 3 Oscars, another 42 award wins & 32 nominations?

No you can't, but Jimmy can.

As a master propagandist with a degree in physics his ability to create a far more scientific world in a person's mind is amazing.

In Avatar the viewer is bombarded with stunning visuals and strong emotional content. So many different yet familiar themes are thrown at you it is difficult to take it all in, in one viewing. Let's start "Part 1" by addressing the major sciences presented to us in the film and the truths behind them...

Unobtainium, Pandora and Floating Mountains
As is the calling card of science fiction we find a consistent scientific theme wove into fantasy.

On Pandora, a life supporting moon in a distant solar system, the military industrial complex of Earth has discovered unobtainium.

I describe it a "magical, super-conductive, rare earth magnet-on-crack, like mineral"

Avatar's magical rock makes entire mountains with waterfalls, float in the air.

Try not to confuse this with the magical unobtainium from "The Core", which turns heat into energy.

(Joking. I know you won't, because you didn't see it)

There are many signs in the movie that infer gravity and electrical activity on the fictional moon. But to sum up this science quickly, forces this strong would rip the iron from our body.

Currently no room-temperature superconductors are known to exist or thought possible.

A highly magnetic moon with an atmosphere, closely orbiting a gaseous planet, would absorb far too much radiation, magnetic and electrical energy for humans to step foot on without major protection. But we can dream thanks to James Cameron and FOX...

Genetically Engineered Trans-human Na'vi

In the movie, a team of humans transfer their consciousness to a transgenically modified hybrid of the Pandoran indigenous species with a dash of human DNA.
"Although neuro-scientists are working on brain-machine interfaces have allowed humans and other primates to control the movements of machines, Miguel Nicolelis, the Duke University neuro-scientist Popular Mechanics consulted, notes that the transfer of one's consciousness into a biological body is several orders of magnitude beyond what is currently feasible."*
The trick to this science is the consciousness transfer. With the level of advancement in transgenics or genetic engineering, we could feasibly make the human/smurf body with today's or only slightly future technology.

You doubt that?

Meet spider-goat, http://www.physorg.com/news194539934.html, a transgenic goat whose milk makes spider-webs. While spider-goat isn't from a extraterrestrial moon, to be uploaded with human consciousness, it is an amazing advance to human-smurf hybrids.

As far as putting your mind into something else, biological or machine, we have to be happy with the advancements in biology and neuroscience.

According to a time-line based on Moore's law (exponential growth of technology) 2013 is supposedly when we will have the computational power to digitally "copy" a human mind and in 2025 we will be able to "paste" it.**

This of course is still speculative, most studies have only been able to digitally recreate portions of mice brains, which is far from uploading yourself into a genetically engineered body of "ET" for Halloween. But its being worked on as you read this, rest assured.

Robotic Exo-Suits
Similar to the "power loader" from Cameron's "Aliens", Avatar's exoskeleton is based in a very real and current technology. In fact armed forces are just 3-4 years away from seeing these exoskeletons, de-tether on the unclassified level.

Expect heavy use in military and in industry, because after these hit the market, who would want a forklift? If you aren't excited about running around with the ability to give the Lincoln Memorial a "wedgie" in just a few years... you are just silly.

As you would imagine from a world at war the majority of the research in this area is focusing on making the technology smaller, stronger and more resource efficient. The exo-suits featured in Avatar are large and awkward compared to realities current focus.

As technology advances we will probably see larger flight capable robotic suits for military purposes in a decade.

Holographic Display
Another technology Avatar portrayed that isn't too far from being sold in Wal Mart, is holography.

"The technique of holography can also be used to store, retrieve, and process information optically. While it has been possible to create a 3-D holographic picture of a static object since the 1960s, it is only in the last few years[1] that arbitrary scenes or videos can be shown on a holographic volumetric display."***
Holography is what I would deem, grade a awesome.  Basically, the better computing becomes this stuff gets better and better. Expect this science to pervade the consumer market beginning in the next 2-4 years.

Of course it will be decades to see anything like we see in the movie.

(Put the tech in this video on my, list of things I want like a eight year old on Christmas.)

The current technologies are costly and usually involve real-time three dimensional computer projections on screens or video feeds.

Still awesome. Imagine being 6 years old learning about dinosaurs with one of these things... because it is going to happen.

Space Travel & Cyrogenics

While researching this subject I came across one gentleman who went into amazing detail of the flaws, in the math and exaggeration of science, in Avatar's space travel.

I will not subjecting you to that level of detailed hatred, though i was impressed...

Avatar's method of interstellar travel is actually very accurate for Hollywood. Elongated ships, anti-matter engines and cryo-sleep are among the tops ideas for serious cosmic journeys.

Human hibernation will involve inducing mammalian hibernation through genetic therapy.**** A few documented humans already have been shown to exhibit hibernation genes naturally in times of great stress.

Studying mammalian hibernation is also benefiting cardiovascular care with new approaches on how to lower & manage vital signs besides the chuckling derived from studying this picture.

How long will it be until you can sleep away a trip to Alpha Centauri A? I'm not too sure. But you can remember you heard it here, it's gonna happen.

---

Living up to its production costs that rival the GDP of some slave farms, the science presented in this fiction is based in very sound and current research. While the technologies portrayed in the fiction are exaggerated for propaganda sake, they hold enough real science to appease me...

More impressive than the science in the movie, to me, is the science of the movie. And that is another story for next time. The half billion dollar production of Avatar presented underlying themes and agendas in a new format as no other blockbuster ever has. Avatar 2 is currently scheduled for release, December 2014

Stranger: Then I proceed to throw the lace-less shoes at the beaver, one by one, to distract it Stranger: Next, I use the laces and duct tape to attach the balloon to my head. You: The beavier is angrier and more determined to attack You: It is drawing near Stranger: As it is a good sized balloon with helium, the loss of weight of the extra shoes lifts me off of the ground. You: The beaver jump at your rising figure, snapping at your toes, but luckily you are high enough to avoid its rabid attack You: Now you are rising above the treeline, still with nailclippers and ducttape You: You will continue to rise unless you figure out a way to get back to land You: the wind picks up and blows you eastward, towards what looks like a wooden hut Stranger: I use the nail clippers to snip the balloon string. I fall on the roof. You: You land on the roof, which then cracks and sends you falling into the shack below. You are not badly injured. Stranger: PHEW. You: The shack appears to be abandoned. You are in a small dusty room. You: There is a door to your left, and a peice of paper next to your feet Stranger: I pick up the paper to read it. You: It appears to be a faded map, with one corner missing. It may lead to treasure. You: It is too dark to make out much more. Stranger: I moved to where the hole in the ceiling is, to let in some light on the map. You: You see a crude drawing of a house, presumably the shack you are in. A dotted line rises north, across what may be a river, and then turns sharply east where a thick black X is revealed. You: The door is still to your left, and you are armed with duct tape, nai clippers, and a ragged balloon is still strapped to your head. You also have the map. You: You hear some thumps at the door You: Then a scraping sound You: After a few minutes you realise that it is the beaver, trying to eat through the door. Stranger: I look around to see if there are any other doors that lead outside. You: There is a boarded up window to your right, and a pile of scraps directly below it. You: The scrap pile is covered in dust, so it is difficult to discern what exactly is in the pile. Stranger: I kick aside the scraps to reveal what is underneath. You: You get a splinter in your ankle. You: Underneath, you see a crowbar, a lighter, and some rusty bent nails Stranger: pick up the crowbar and the lighter, and pry open the boarded up window, Stranger: *. You: Piece by piece, you pry the boards away. Sunlight trickles through a cracked window. You: The gnawing noises at the door are getting louder and more insistent You: The window is now free of boards. Stranger: I jump out the window and take off running. You: You jump at the window, and realise the glass was still there. Ouch. Because it was cracked, it shatters and you are left bleeding. You: You make it through the window and limp hurridly away from the shack. The sun is beginning to set You: You still are grasping the map in one hand, and the crowbar in the other. Stranger: I check to make sure the nail clippers are still in my pocket, and the duck tape and string in my hair You: All items are acocunted for. You: accounted* Stranger: Lovely. Stranger: Lighter? You: In your pocket with the nail clippers Stranger: Also lovely. You: You look around and find yourself in a clearing. You hear water rushing in the distance. You: Behind you, you hear faint angry squealing noises. The beaver must have finally eaten its way through the door, only to find you had escaped You: It is angrier than ever and determined to hunt you down You: It is a rare known fact that beavers, particularly rabid ones, have a very keen sense of smell. You: After some sniffing around, the beaver finds your scent and starts hobbling angrily in your direction You: You are starting to gather dust. You: The beaver is now very close, and it smells your blood. It hungers. Stranger: (sorry, vanished) Stranger: I turn around and hold the crowbar like a baseball bat, ready to defend myself. You: The beaver leaps at you, squealing as though it were possessed Stranger: I swing the crowbar, aiming for its head You: Roll to determine outcome of crowbar swing? Y/N Stranger: Y You: (1=worst, 12=best) You: 9. You: You swing at the beaver’s head and connect. Not hard enough to kill it, but the creature is momentarily stunned Stranger: I flee. You: You run towards the sound of rushing water, remembering that there may be some special treasure if you follow the map You: You eventually reach a river, which is rushing pretty rapidly. It is narrow but deep. You: The beaver has regained control and is limping towards you, making a strange screeching noise Stranger: I do not dive in, for beavers are slow on land but fast in the water. I run down the bank, looking for a way to cross the river. You: You run eastwards along the bank, and soon come across a delapitated wonden bridge. It looks like it could fall apart at any minute. You: wooden* You: However, for now it still stands. Stranger: I attempt to inflate the balloon again You: The balloon has a small hole in it. You: All the helium has escaped You: The beaver is once again gaining on you You: It is excited by the prospect of killing you. It would be able to feed its family a feast like never before! You: Typically this beaver eats smaller creatures. It is a carnivore beaver. However, driven by hunger and sickness, it is determined to land a great meal. Stranger: I make a daring leap across the bridge, praying that light feet will prevent it from breaking. You: You land halfway across the bridge on a semi-sturdy plank of wood. There are large gaps where the wood has rotted away. Contiunuing with your momentum, a second leap takes you to the end of the bridge You: You foot falls through, but the rest of your body tumbles forward onto land You: Your ankle is twisted and cut, but still usable. Stranger: I hobble up, using the crowbar, and continue running. You: You consult the map and realise you must be close to the treasure. You: You run eastward a bit farther when you stumble over a shovel You: You trip and fall. You: Behind you, the beaver contemplates the bridge in a rare act of brains over brawn You: The shovel is laying over what appears to be a fresh mound of dirt, You: . Stranger: Oh dear… Stranger: Sir or Miss Stranger? Stranger: You have led me on a thrilling quest, but I am afraid that I must remove myself from this website. I have homework I must complete, and bed to attend to. Stranger: I thank you greatly for the adventure you provided. It was most entertaining! Stranger: And thus… Stranger: I find myself unable to get up, even to use the shovel You: very well. The ending was that you found an arsenal of weapons such as a flamethrower, shotguns, etc with which to kill the beaver. Success! Stranger: : D You: Thanks for playing along :) Stranger: ! Stranger: Of course! Stranger: Do you find many who are willing to play? You: Not too many hehe You: Good luck with your homework :D Take care and don’t dream of beavers. Ciao! You have disconnected.
